On April 17, 2020, Rick Brewer’s grandpa, Lowell Polley, passed away. One of the first things he did after his passing was re-organize and catalogue all of the recorded conversations he had with him, dating as far back as 2014. He logged dozens of hours of recordings with Lowell that detail family history and stories of his childhood growing up in rural Indiana during the Great Depression. Many of these stories would now be lost in time without these recordings.
Soon after, Rick created the Let’s Reminisce podcast to spread more awareness about recording family stories, an ancient-tradition that is no longer mainstream. Through these narrative-driven stories, his hope is that listeners will see the value in this practice and pick up a recorder and document stories from your loved ones. History does not have to come from large books or a high school social studies test; instead, history can be very personal and change how you see your family and yourself.
